What a Day for Hockey in St Mary’s!

The 1st of March saw St Mary’s hosting 4 hockey fixtures against St Wolstan’s Ceilbridge. We kicked off early with the first year game. This was a tough start with lots of opportunities for both sides. A quick goal by Lucie Dunne, just before the half time whistle put St Mary’s in the lead. Early in the second half St Wolstan’s pulled a goal back. The rest of the half, provided opportunities, however, neither team could find the back of the goal and the game ended 1-1.

Match 2 saw the 2nd year minor 2’s play their last game of the season. With some recent losses motivation was high to get some goals. And indeed early in the half St Mary’s found the back of St Wolstan’s goal! The girls had to work hard and were rewarded again with another goal  before the half time whistle.
Spirits were high at half time and this continued in the rest of the game as the team’s confidence grew. A beautifully worked short corner, again provided a goal to give Rose Roy a hat trick! And just before the final whistle Mai Perkins managed to score. A lovely result to end the season. Well done everyone.

Match 3 saw the junior team in action. This was a tough match of two very strong teams. Every player was challenged and worked hard. Some great saves from keeper Shanice Marks kept a clean sheet throughout the first half. The 2nd half saw the battle continue. Some short corners gave St Mary’s opportunities for a goal but St Wolstan’s defence proved very strong. The game continued this way for most of the half however a short corner in the last minute resulted in a St Mary’s goal to conclude the game at 1-0.

The final match of the day was St Mary’s Senior team again St Wolstan’s seniors. Again this was another tough game with both teams getting chances but neither able to get a lead. At the end of the half it was 0-0. Short corners for both teams provided chances in the 2nd half but neither team could find the back of the goal. Final score 0-0.

Well done to everyone who played today, it’s wonderful to have so many enthusiastic talented hockey players in our school. Keep up the great work!hockeymarch2
