The campaign is designed to raise awareness of the urgent need for reform in the Leaving Cert Art curriculum.
Key points for change:
Marking scheme: the current system means A1s are proportionally less achievable than any other Leaving Cert subject.
Curriculum development & reform: despite requests, the Art Leaving Cert curriculum has not been revised since 1972.
Third level Art entry requirements: Leaving Cert Art itself is not required for entry to 3rd level (matriculation). However, portfolios are an essential component of entry, but aren’t covered within the curriculum. This puts extra financial and time pressure on students during the crucial Leaving Cert year.
It is essential that the Department of Education, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) and State Examination Commission (SEC) work together with art teachers, parent and student groups and relevant partners in culture and industry to design and implement a new Leaving Cert curriculum, not simply assessment reform.
Please support our day of action on 26th of October 2016; to raise awareness and promote change for students of today and to ensure the future creativity of our country.
