Sporting Successes Start The Year Off With A Bang!

An Emphatic Junior Camogie Win Leads them to the Final!Camogie 2018

Following on our senior Camogie team victory in their  semi-final against Our Lady’s Grove Secondary School in Goatstown on 10th January, on Monday 15th January our junior Camogie team had an emphatic win over Loreto Beaufort in their semi-final. The team which is comprised of talented students ranging from second to fourth year took inspiration from their senior counterparts and qualified for their second final in two weeks. Despite the difficulty of playing on an astro turf pitch the players quickly adapted and netted three times before half time. The girls set up defensively in the second half but worked hard throughout. The scores kept coming and in the end they ran out easy winners with a final score of 6.05 to 0.05. The players have just over a week to get ready for their final which will take place on Friday 26th of January! The senior team will play their final this Friday 19th January. It has been a great month for Camogie in the school with two teams in their respective finals! Thanks to their trainers Ms Walsh and Ms O’Mahoney for helping them to get this far!

U-16 Division 2 Basketball Quarter Final Victory – Wednesday 17th JanuaryBasketball2018

We played host to Our Lady’s Drogheda for a second bite of the cherry in the quarter final. Due to a power outage which stopped the original game in the third quarter we were forced to organise a replay. This was hugely disappointing as we led by 8 points at the time, with only a quarter to play. In today’s game, we took an early lead in the first quarter thanks to a string of baskets in quick succession from team captain Ciara Whelan. We played awesome offence, but took some time to settle into our defensive game. This allowed Drogheda to put away two easy baskets to keep them in contention.

In the second quarter St Mary’s really started to turn up the heat. We played our best basketball of the season keeping Drogheda scoreless for the quarter. Jade Callery was tenacious on defence, intercepting several passes and converting at the opposite end on the fast break. Aoife Symes used her height to snatch several defensive rebounds which opened up play for Jade Callery to slot away a few baskets.

The third quarter saw the welcome addition of Paige Smith and Alya Hannigan. Paige and Alya linked up well under the board on defence and kept Drogheda to a low score once more. Karla Tyrell read the game extremely well and caused Drogheda to turn the ball over several times. Sama Khalil fought valiantly on defence giving Drogheda terrible trouble. In the final quarter the players did not take their foot off the gas. They continued with the same intensity and passion as displayed from the outset. Rose Roy playing her best game of the season, fought brilliantly on defence and also scored confidently on offence. We finished off the game with baskets from Aoife, Alya, Ciara and Karla to run away with a comprehensive victory.CamogieBaslketball
