REQUEST FOR UNIFORM DONATIONS
23rd May 2020
News
Notice for 3rd and 6th year students and their parents and guardians: Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, In the present precarious circumstances we are requesting donations of school uniforms from third and sixth year students who no longer have any need for them. The Parents Association would normally hold their ‘Second Hand Book and Uniform Sale’ in late June but this, unfortunately, will not be possible with the present restrictions in place. They have assured us that the sale will happen next year as usual and if students wish to hold on to their books to sell at the sale next year they can do so and we will contact past 6th years to remind them about this event. However, if you wish to donate your books now we will ensure that they find good homes and that all items donated will benefit our students. We are always very grateful for any donations of uniforms that we receive. This year we anticipate that the need will be greater than ever and we urge you to donate any articles of uniform that you can. We would particularly appreciate school jackets so we could ensure that every student will have appropriate winter attire for the wet and windy season. To facilitate the delivery of donations in line with HSE and government guidance we are designating next Wednesday as ‘Donation Day’. Colin will set up a one way system in and out of the gym where tables will be placed at a safe distance apart for you to leave any items you are donating. Strict social distancing rules will be in operation. You may deliver donations on Wednesday 27th May anytime between 9am and 3pm. If for any reason you can not make it to the school on that day or during those times but would like to make a donation, please ring us on 01-8374413, or email bbourke@stmaryshfg.ie and we will make an arrangement to suit you. As ever, we are deeply indebted to you for your generosity during this unprecedented emergency, and over the years. Keep safe and well. Warmest regards, B Bourke...

Leaving Certificate Update
8th May 2020
News
Dear Parents/Guardians, Please see below a letter from the school regarding the Minister’s Announcement: Letter to LC Parents and Guardiansdocx All students to be offered the option of accepting Calculated Grades or sitting Leaving Certificate written examinations at a later date The Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD has today (Friday 8 May 2020) brought this time of stress and uncertainty for sixth year students to a welcome end with his announcement about the Leaving Certificate. All students are to be offered the option of receiving Calculated Grades for the subjects they are studying and the alternative of sitting the 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations at a date in the future when it is considered safe to hold the examinations. The Minister stated at the decision was taken with the best interests of students at heart was the fairest and most equitable way to do that in the current circumstances. The following is a breakdown of the process to be applied for students to be given the option of Calculated Grades or to sit the examinations. The 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations, previously scheduled to take place in late July and August, have been postponed. There will be no Leaving Certificate fee this year. All exam fees which have been paid will be refunded. Teachers will be asked to provide a professional judgment of each student’s attainment which will be subjected to a rigorous in-school alignment process to ensure fairness. The school principal will approve the estimated scores being provided and the rankings of each student in each subject in the school. A special unit is being established within the Department of Education and Skills to process the data provided by each school and operate national standardisation, again to ensure fairness amongst all students. The Department will finalise the grades for each student which will be issued to each student as close as possible to the traditional date. Formal State certification will also be provided. Students will retain the right to appeal. This will involve checks on school-entered data; correct transfer of that data to the Department; a review that it was correctly received and processed by the Department; and a verification of the Department’s processes by independent appeal scrutineers. Students will also retain the right to the sit the 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations at a date in the future when it is deemed safe for state examinations to be held. We hope that this announcement will provide much needed clarity for our Leaving Certificate students and alleviate the stress that has been building up due to the uncertainty of the last few weeks....

Message from President Higgins to the parents of students in our schools on the importance of social distancing
23rd March 2020
News
The JMB our management body and the other management bodies representing all of the second-level schools in the State are communicating with their schools and asking them to forward the message delivered by President Higgins on the importance of social distancing to the parents of students in our schools. https://president.ie/en/media-library/news-releases/statement-from-president-of-ireland-following-his-signature-of-the-health-preservation-and-protection-and-other-emergency-measures-in-the-public-interest-bill-2020 President Higgins is urging young people to respond in a generous way to the Health Service Executive’s advice on measures to alleviate the spread of Covid-19. Students are reminded that they can play their part in the national effort to curb the spread and the worse effects of the Covid-19 virus. Schools are closed to students at present to prevent the spread of this highly contagious and potentially lethal virus. By avoiding assembling and socialising in groups, students will be playing their part in supporting the national health campaign. This further reinforces the pronouncements of An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, other government ministers and health officials on the responsibility of all to adhere to social distance guidelines and to respond to HSE advice at this time of national emergency. The full text of the President’s address can be accessed at the link below: https://president.ie/en/media-library/news-releases/statement-from-president-of-ireland-following-his-signature-of-the-health-preservation-and-protection-and-other-emergency-measures-in-the-public-interest-bill-2020 ...
Doing Our Bit To Control Covid-19 And Flatten The Curve By Adhering To Social And Physical Distancing Guidelines
23rd March 2020
News
Dear Parents and Students, We hope you and your wider networks of family and friends are all keeping safe and well and maintaining the necessary social and physical distancing during this crucial time. It has come to our attention that senior students are being invited out – to hangouts in houses, with groups going for walks etc. which is completely against the guidelines that the HSE is at pains to implement in order to protect society and our most vulnerable in society from this virus and to flatten the curve so that we don’t experience the worst effects that Italy is presently experiencing. Young people can fight this virus but if they do not obey the rules of social and physical distancing and continue to meet in groups they will bring the virus back into their homes and endanger the lives of their vulnerable family members who may be older or may have underlying health conditions. We all have someone in our family or wider social circle who is at risk – who has diabetes, asthma, a heart or respiratory condition or a compromised immune system and we have to be mindful of them at all times in the personal choices we make. This is a worrying time for all of us but if we obey the guidelines as set down by the HSE we can control the spread of this virus for which there is as yet no vaccine. Young people who are playing such an important role in the fight against climate change can also take a leading role in the fight against Covid-19. We are depending on you now more than ever before. The longer we disregard the importance of social and physical distancing the longer this goes on. We appeal to parents and students to heed the guidelines and we will all come through this crisis with the best outcomes possible. Young people are speaking out in response to this issue and some of the responses are below for your information. Please see below an article where Jennifer Barry Young Offenders star apologises for her lack of responsibility in attending a house party recently: https://www.echolive.ie/corknews/Coronavirus-Young-Offenders-star-urges-people-to-stay-home-after-heartbreaking-moment-with-her-father-411430c2-4f57-460a-a35b-5728c5f8d1ac-ds And this important media campaign below set up to encourage young people to abide by social and physical distancing: https://twitter.com/RTE2fm/status/1239846394648760320?s=08 “Jennifer Barry says that she is fearful of contracting coronavirus after she went out in Cork City recently. The actress, who plays Siobhan on the hit show The Young Offenders, has spoken of her concerns about contracting Covid-19 after she ignored her parents’ warnings about going out with friends recently. The 19-year-old said she regretted her decision to head out when she learned of how dangerous the virus could be to her and her family. Speaking with Ryan Tubridy on his RTE Radio One show today, Jennifer said: ‘So there was actually a house party on in Cork City. Now, because I’m not in college, I don’t get that many opportunities to go out with my friends, and hearing that they were finished in college and stuff, it was a huge celebration for me because it meant that they’d be around more. ‘My parents warned me before I went out.’ ‘They said, “You’re making a mistake here and it’s not something you should be doing during these kinds of times with the coronavirus”,’ she added. ‘I just said, “Look, no one’s going to have it up there. We’re all young. We’re not going to give it to each other or anything, that’s not going to happen”. ‘And I stupidly ignored their advice.’ Jennifer admitted that she hadn’t been focussed on the news as of late so she didn’t understand quite how serious the situation with Covid-19 is. The TV star says she had been avoiding it as there hadn’t been many cases in Ireland and that she didn’t ‘want it to seem real’. She now reveals she is ‘furious’ at herself for taking the risk and putting her family in danger. Revealing that her mother is currently on medication for her heart and her sister suffers from asthma, she admitted that she is now ‘living in fear’ because of ‘something I stupidly did’. Calling her actions selfish, Jennifer encouraged others to really think about the precautions that have been put in place and to take them seriously.” You can listen to the podcast of Jennifer with Ryan Tubridy on the link below: Thinking of you all on this beautiful spring day as we all navigate these unpredictable waters together. We pray for the health and safety of each member of our school community, of all those we hold near and dear and of our greater global community....
A Prayer For Our School And Wider Community
22nd March 2020
News
Thinking of you all on this beautiful Sunday morning as we all navigate these unpredictable waters together. We pray for the health and safety of each member of our school community, of all those we hold near and dear and of our greater global community. Lockdown: A Reflection by Brother Richard Hendrick OFM Cap Yes there is fear. Yes there is isolation. Yes there is panic buying. Yes there is sickness. Yes there is even death. But, They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise You can hear the birds again. They say that after just a few weeks of quiet The sky is no longer thick with fumes But blue and grey and clear. They say that in the streets of Assisi People are singing to each other across the empty squares, keeping their windows open so that those who are alone may hear the sounds of family around them. They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound. Today a young woman I know is busy spreading fliers with her number through the neighbourhood So that the elders may have someone to call on. Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples are preparing to welcome and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way All over the world people are waking up to a new reality To how big we really are. To how little control we really have. To what really matters. To Love. So we pray and we remember that Yes there is fear. But there does not have to be hate. Yes there is isolation. But there does not have to be loneliness. Yes there is panic buying. But there does not have to be meanness. Yes there is sickness. But there does not have to be disease of the soul Yes there is even death. But there can always be a rebirth of love. Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now. Today, breathe. Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic The birds are singing again The sky is clearing, Spring is coming, And we are always encompassed by Love. Open the windows of your soul And though you may not be able to touch across the empty square, Sing. Brother Richard Hendrick, 13 March 2020...

Advice from The Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health
16th March 2020
News
The Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health has said the next seven days will be “vital” in controlling the spread of COVID-19. Dr Tony Holohan wrote on Twitter that “now is the time” to flatten the curve, the concept used to describe the spread of the new coronavirus. He wrote that “every one of us must play our part” in attempting to delay and reduce a peak in the number of cases and subsequent burden on hospitals. Beautiful Prayer Composed By Pope Francis That We Can All Use And Share Over These Coming Weeks.
14th March 2020
News
A simple prayer we can use and share over the coming weeks. We take a moment to remember all those who are sick and those who care for them, our frontline healthcare workers, and all who protect and serve our communities at this time. Traditionally and historically at times of struggle and crisis in the world, Catholics have turned to Our Lady in prayer. The Pope offered a prayer to the Virgin Mary on Wednesday afternoon, in a video message to mark the Diocese of Rome’s day of prayer and fasting for the coronavirus emergency. Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, said Tuesday that the Pope wanted to entrust the city of Rome, all of Italy, and “the entire world to the protection of the Mother of God, as a sign of salvation and hope” during the ongoing coronavirus emergency. The choice to celebrate Wednesday’s Mass at the Divine Love Sanctuary holds significant historical value. Pope Pius XII went to pray there before the statue of Our Lady in June 1944. He pleaded for the salvation of the city of Rome as Nazi troops withdrew from Italy during World War II. Now, over 75 years later, Pope Francis has asked the Virgin Mary to watch over the world in this current moment of crisis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=12&v=D2wxD3YvfeQ&feature=emb_title Below is the beautiful prayer composed by Pope Francis that we can all use over these coming weeks. School Closed From 6pm This Evening Following Government Statement
12th March 2020
News
An announcement was made this morning by the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD of the closure of schools, pre-schools and further and higher education settings, for a period until 29 March 2020, to support efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19. This will take effect from 6pm this evening, Thursday 12 March. This is in line with the advice of the National Public Health Emergency Team. All pupils and students, from pre-school to third level are urged to practice social distancing, and to minimise physical contact with each other, to help avoid the spread of Covid-19. This should include minimising social contact, avoiding meeting up and keeping physical space between them. Parents and guardians are urged to support their children to maintain this approach. The Department of Education and Skills has issued the following advice for parents and schools on talking to children and young people about COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Talking to children and young people about Covid-19 Download advice for parents and schools In order to minimise the impact on teaching and learning our school will provide remote learning for our students. We have been working on our contingency plan over the past week and before we closed today all students had been provided with access to their Office 365 accounts and teachers have set up Microsoft Teams to communicate with their individual class groups and teach them remotely through this platform. Students are asked to treat each school day as a normal school day where learning will occur between 8.55am and the end of the school day. Students have been encouraged to take home whatever books they need and to use E-books where available by utilising the codes. The Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD said: “I am deeply conscious of the impact that school and education setting closures have on students, on families and on the wider community. This is a necessary and proportionate measure that we are taking as a pro-active measure to help contain the threat of Covid-19. The Department of Education and Skills urges all pupils and students to practice social distancing and that includes minimising social contact, interaction, meeting up, etc. The Department’s press release is available at the following link: https://www.education.ie/en/Press-Events/Press-Releases/2020-press-releases/12-march-2020-statement-from-the-department-of-education-and-skills.html We urge all our students to follow the advice of the HSE and the Department of Education and Skills and pray that all members of our extended school community stay safe and well...
The Blessing of our newly refurbished Prayer Room
10th March 2020
News
It was a proud and memorable day for St Mary’s on 27th February 2020 when the Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin DD visited our school to Bless our newly refurbished Prayer Room and preside at our Blessing Ceremony. Invited guests at this momentous event included Fr Richard Sheehy and Father Damien McNiece, representatives of students, teachers, parents, Board of Management, Le Chéile and our many honoured guests from the Holy Faith Order. We are deeply indebted to Archbishop Diarmuid for so kindly agreeing to be the Presider at this very special Liturgy of Blessing for our newly refurbished Prayer Room. This day marked the culmination of more than three years of relentless planning and working towards a vision that has been realised in this renovation project. We are very grateful to all those who contributed towards the realisation of that vision. To the school community for contributing so generously to our fund raising campaign, to the O’Brien Trust which matched our fundraising total in grant aid and and to our Parents’ Association whose generous donation was used exclusively to fund the stain glass windows especially commissioned to tell the story of Margaret Aylward and the Holy Faith order in Glasnevin and our school. The two panels were designed to create one picture linked by the rays of hope from Margaret Aylward’s lamp – the same lamp that shone in the darkness of her prison cell symbolising for us the light of faith. The bottom panels depict the waters of our local river and the waters of life that feature in the Holy Faith emblem. The Cedar of Lebanon which proudly stands protected in the convent grounds sits on the hills of Glasnevin beside O’Connell’s round tower. The rays of light emanating from the lamp reach up to the sky and to the polar star and as we gaze our eyes are directed upwards towards the heavens. The curved seating areas have been carefully designed and constructed to enclose a serene space where the original parquet floor has been exposed and lovingly restored to its former glory. These soft curves are offset by the lines of the beautiful oak altar design – which houses behind closed gates the precious Tabernacle. The beautiful Icon of the Holy Mother of God written for us by Sr Veronica Maguire depicts Our Lady, hands outstretched in supplication, inviting those who gaze to enter into her sacred and healing presence. In a world of noise and over stimulation this sacred space, the very heart and soul of our school, affords us all the opportunity to take time out, to meditate and to connect with God and with our inner selves. It is our intention to introduce all of our students to our Prayer Room over the coming weeks and we hope that it becomes a place of solace and comfort to those in need of consolation and restoration, and a place of joy where we can come to give thanks to God for our many blessings....
