The Junior Certificate Programme in St. Mary’s comprises subjects which are taken at Foundation level (Bonnleibhéal), Ordinary level (Gnáthleibhéal) or Higher level (Ardleibhéal). It is a three-year course culminating in the Junior Certificate Examination. Students in St. Mary’s follow a number of core subjects and a selection from a range of other subjects. Since the school year 2007 / 2008, St. Mary’s has offered a programme of Mixed Ability teaching and Subject Sampling in First Year.
Students in St. Mary’s follow a number of core subjects which include Gaeilge, English, Mathematics, History, Geography, Religious Education, Social Personal and Health Education, Civic Social and Political Education, and a selection from Science, Business Studies, French, Spanish, German, Art and Music. The examination incorporates written tests in all subjects, except Art, Craft and Design. In addition, there are aural tests in the subjects of Gaeilge, French, Spanish and German. There are practical examinations in Art, Craft and Design, Music and Home Economics. There is Practical Course Work in Art, Craft and Design, Home Economics, Religious Education, Civic Social and Political Education and Science. Results in the Junior Certificate Examination are given in the form of grades. Computer Studies, though not an examination subject, is also available thoughout the Junior Cycle.
