The 2nd Year Premier Basketball Team and the 2nd Year Division 2 Team are through tho the finals in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on 23rd March!!
Friday 10th March saw the 2nd year division 2 team travel to St Aidan’s school to meet Mercy Coolock in the basketball semi finals. After the premier team’s success the previous day the team was ready for action and desperate to get a place in the finals.
The game started well with the first score for St Mary’s by Aoife Symes. However Mercy was very quick with their reply to equalise. This game continued like this for most of the quarter. St Mary’s offence was excellent with the girls working hard to feed passes to each other and to look for fast breaks. This hard work resulted in an 8-4 lead for St Mary’s at the end of the quarter.
The second 5 players continued to build on our first quarter success, with scores for Rose Roy and Jade Callery. The girls tightened up on their defence and made scoring very difficult for Mercy Coolock.
The 2nd half of the match continued in a similar vein to the first and the team continued to dominate the play. There were scores for Karla Tyrell, Jade Callery, Georgia Lee Thomas, Aoife Symes and Terri Townley.
The final score was 33-16. This was a wonderful win for the team, congratulations to everyone who was involved today. Training is back next week to get us match ready for the Basketball finals in Tallaght on the 23rd March.

Today (Thursday 9th March) saw St Mary’s travel to Lucan Leisure centre to take on Maynooth in the 2nd year premier basketball semi final. With a place in Tallaght up for grabs the nerves and excitement were high.
The game started well for St Mary’s with the first score of the game by Rosie Larkin. Maynooth answered back quickly to draw level. The girls settled into their rhythm and a lead occurred. At the end of the first quarter St Mary’s was leading 12-3, with scores from Rosie Larkin, Sarah Hanlon and Aoibheann Kelly. The 2nd quarter was similar to the first, with the 2nd five of the team working hard to maintain the lead and pushing hard on the offence. This quarter saw scores by Mai Perkins and Kate Meaney.
The third and fourth quarter saw Maynooth fighting back with some good scores and some free throws. The team worked their socks off to continue to put pressure on Maynooth and every time they scored St Mary’s replied back with a score of our own. Our lead continued and there were scores for Mai Perkins, Rosie Larkin, Sarah Hanlon and Aoibhean Kelly.
The final whistle blew with the score 46-28. This was a wonderful performance by every member of the team – we are so proud of you all and look forward to finding out who we’ll meet in Tallaght on the 23rd of March!
